Chromatography was introduced to the world of science by renowned scientist Mikhail Tsvet in the 1900s. In essence, it’s the process of flushing different components through a system at different rates. What this achieves is a separation of these components over a stationary bed based on the molecular structure of each component.

Why does this matter?

Within the chemical or bioprocessing industry, chromatography is essential in separating and purifying products from complex mixtures. This achieves very precise separation of a multitude of mixtures whether they are very similar in molecular structure. This process has the ability to separate even the most delicate products and is a great tool for fields such as biotechnology and more.

How it works

The entire process of chromatographyis quite fascinating to say the least. The process consists of a solvent tank, a pump, feed injection, chromatography column, an oven and the chromatograph.

Step 1:

The feed is injected into the system. This is powered by a pump. Previously gravity was used to move the solvent through the process.

Step 2:

As the solvent flows through the column, the components will be observed at different rates based on their molecular structure. The stronger the attraction of these components, the slower it moves over the chromatography column.

Step 3:

Finally, the different components will be eluted from the column. As mentioned in step 2, components with the weakest absorption rates will elute first, while those who have greater absorption rates will elute last.

Step 4:

When collecting the samples, each are collected at different stages. In this step scientists analyze the emerging component by measuring the property, which is related to the chemical composition of the original component.
